Today is the 1 month mark since Justin took his Oath and joined the army, and also how long it's been since we dropped him off to go to boot camp. It definitely hasn't been easy, but it has somehow been going by pretty quickly. It feels like it was a week ago that we said goodbye, so that's a good thing! Can't wait to get through the next month and a half!
So far, it's been hard to not be able to hear from him everyday. The last phone call I got from him was about two and a half weeks ago, and there was one week where I didn't get a single letter from him. That was definitely a hard week. I finally received a letter from him on Monday, and he had 3 letters sent in one envelope. The first letter was all about venting about some of the immature SITs (soldiers in training). In the next couple of letters he told me that Boot Camp wasn't as hard as he thought it was going to be. All he has to do is basically listen and do what they're told. He said the thing that he needs to work on most is his physical training.
What Justin is striving to work hard on is graduating with Honors. Aside from JD and I, that is another motivation for him. That person needs to be proficient, knowledgeable and well spoken. He said that there are 2 from each platoon that get nominated and go before the company commander and his right hand (a First Sergeant). They'll be asked questions and asked to demonstrate different things. If he got it, he'd be one of eight out of 150 or so to go before the board, and would be specially recognized. If he doesn't get it, I'd just be proud that he graduated boot camp!
Justin is finally shooting his gun, and he is pretty excited about that. I know this was something he was looking forward to doing at boot camp. So far he has lost 6 pounds since his first weigh in when he got there, and by the time he had written his letter, he felt like he had lost more. I cannot wait to see what he's going to look like after boot camp.
He's working hard, and said that aside from missing JD and I, he is doing great and that we shouldn't be worried about him. I'm always worrying, but I know that he is doing fine.
