Potty Training - Week 1

JD has just finished his first week of potty training. How's it going you ask? I hate it!

I really can't say that I hate it too much, though, since daycare is the one who deals with him for the majority of the week. Apparently, JD has no problem sitting on the potty there, but when he's home, he just refuses. We constantly have to bribe him with things to get him to sit down for as long as he can.

The first day, JD went pee twice on the potty, once at daycare and once right before he went to bed. The second day, he sat on the potty for most of the day at daycare and went a lot and even went poop once. After that, it's been very rare that's he's gone potty at all while sitting on the toilet. The problem with JD is that he doesn't recognize that he's going pee (or poop) and doesn't get excited with peeing on the potty.

So, on Saturday, I thought I'd try something a little different hoping he'd want to go at some point on the potty. I let him stay in his big boy underwear for the majority of the day, thinking that he'd hate getting his underwear dirty. Wrong. He didn't care, and once again, didn't notice he went pee.

[If you've skipped through the beginning of this post, you might want to read the following:]

For the rest of the afternoon today, I had JD run around the house with nothing but a shirt on. While playing in his room, JD all of a sudden came to a sudden stop and made a very familiar face, one that I know very well. His pooping face. I immediately called for Justin to hurry and get his potty. Although I had laid out a couple of towels on the carpet, JD had wondered past the towels and onto the carpet. After realizing that Justin wasn't going to make it in time, I did what any crazy mother who didn't feel like cleaning poop off the carpet would do... I placed my hand underneath JD's butt, and miraculously caught a solid and firm poop (thank goodness it was solid). Completely disgusted, I yelled out "I caught it!!! I caught it!!!" as Justin rushed into the room, and placed JD's potty on the floor so he could finish his business.

Later on in the day, JD went pee all over the floor. I was not going to save the carpet that time. We've got a long way to go...

  1. A girl in my ward used to give her son cold showers when he wet his pants. Mean but apparently effective. I taught his sunbeam class on Sunday and I asked him if he had ever prayed to feel better when he was scared. He said he prayed when he got cold showers and Heavenly Father made him happier. Funny, but sad.
