Another week has flown by, and I can’t believe how fast it’s
been going, although it probably could go a little faster. Justin has been
pretty good about writing, which I was surprised he’d have time to write, or
even want to write since I figured he’d rather use his free time for sleeping. He
has been doing well, and from what I get out of his letters, it sounds like he
is actually having fun learning everything they’re teaching him. Not everything
is fun of course… He has complained about how immature some of the guys in his
group are, which really isn’t a surprise since a lot of them are just out of
high school. Justin claims that they have done so many “punishment push-ups”
because of the immature kids, he will be “ripped” at the end of boot camp.
We’ll see!
Justin said he did get his gun back, and felt like a loser
since he was the only one without it, but is happy to have it back. So far, he
has done Land Navigation (day and night) where they have to find certain points
on a map using a compass and protractor, and actually find their way to that
location. He has also done some repelling and ropes courses (those sounded and
looked like fun to me). And has also done some field exercise training with
their guns.
I think this is Justin...
He also mentioned that he had to go on a hike, where he only
had to carry a back pack that weighed a few pounds, but felt heavier as the
hike got longer. It rained for only a minute, and they were completely soaked
and made everything humid. He said he was completely disgusting afterwards…
glad I was not there to witness that or the one doing his laundry after that
trip.
Justin told me that he has hated cleaning and doing his own
laundry, and although he did not say it in this way, I think he’s starting to
realize how awesome I am and all that I do for him. Now, I’m going to make him
look like a bad husband, but it made me laugh so hard when I read it – this is what
he said, “we’re suppose to be cleaning, but no one ever does. I’ll be excited
not to worry about that anymore because I’ll be able to be at home with you!”
Translation: I hate cleaning… that’s why I have you! I’m hoping he’s developing
useful habits (cleaning and laundry) so that they’ll be used at home too…
wishful thinking.
In Justin’s last letter, he told me he was going to be going
into the gas chamber the next day, and was really excited about it, and assured
me that he was not joking about his excitement. I’m curious to hear how that
went, and if it was as thrilling as he was hoping it would be.
We’ve gone just over a week without getting a phone call
from him, and it’s definitely getting harder. Letters have helped, and it’s
always a nice surprise when I see a letter from Justin in my mailbox. We’re
still hanging in there and looking forward to Justin’s graduation date
(December 5th).
JD is having fun visiting with his grandparents, as they are
the only people we have spent time with these last few weekends. I’m so
grateful that I have both our parents so close to keep us busy and to just have
them there whenever I need them. Still counting down the weeks/days until
Justin gets home.
Here is the Facebook page that gives updates and pictures of
what Justin and his group are doing:
