We arrived to Utah at noon and met with Justin's family for a fabulous luncheon at a Brazilian BBQ. I have never been to one before, and I was amazed at how much there was to eat. The first thing we did was head over to the Salad Bar to load up on whatever you wanted there. I didn't understand how a Brazilian BBQ went, so I loaded up my plate. Bad idea.
Walking around the restaurant are these guys who come to your table with a variety of meat on a stick and slice a small portion of it for you. It amazed me how much meat they cooked and brought out to you. It was fabulous, and filling all at the same time.
After taking a breather from our gigantic meal, we headed over to the Utah State Fair, where JD just completely lost it... My theory is that JD did not get a good night's rest the night before since we woke up him in the middle of his sleep once Justin got home from his last game for the Modesto Nut's season, to drive to Concord to spend the night, and woke up early to get to the airport the next day, and only had a 45 minute - 1 hour nap in the car, and was just exhausted, or he was just having a terrible 2 moment. Either way, he just wasn't having it and cried and screamed for a little while at the fair. The pony ride was the only way to calm him down.
We stayed at the fair to watch a Logger's show (I can't remember what it's called at the moment), but these guys perform all these wood chucking things, like an axe throw into wood, a chopping race, and competed against each other while running on a log floating in water to see who can stay on the log the longest.
After it began sprinkling, we decided to call it quits at the fair and went to check in at our hotel in Park City, Utah. It was an awesome resort, one that I would love to visit again in the winter. They had shops, food, and it was super close to a ski resort, and lots of activities for families with little kids.
The next morning, we went to the resort's little rec center and the kids painted some crafts, and loved it. JD was totally into it and was concentrating very hard on his project as you can see below.
After painting, we headed over to the Park City Outlets and shopped around for a little while, then had another delicious lunch at the Red Iguana (as seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). After lunch, we split up into our separate activities for the remainder of the night. Most of us went to watch the BYU Football game (JD, Justin & I tagged along with Tammy and the girls to her Aunt's house to watch the game on TV), while Kelly and GG (Justin's grandmother) went to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and James Taylor, and had quite the adventure trying to find the rental car after the show.
Sunday was Hattie's blessing, and all the cousins had a lot of fun playing with JD's no mess coloring book and markers. I was the lucky person holding his coloring book in my lap and had at least 5 kids at one point gathered around me. That was fun! After the baby blessing, we had an awesome lunch, and celebrated Vi's early birthday.
Monday was an awful day... JD had been throwing up on Sunday, and it continued throughout the early morning on Monday. Worried that it was going to continue on our trip back home, Justin gave him a blessing, and luckily things calmed down. When JD had finally woken up, he stopped throwing up, and had a little bit of an appetite. We headed over to the BYU bookstore and bought (what felt like) a lot of stuff.
After the bookstore, we got dropped off at the Provo Airport and started the disaster of the trip back home. The airport is so small, they only have one commercial airline, Allegiant, and a vending machine for food and drinks. JD still wasn't feeling good so he was a little whiny, and super tired. He was excited to get back on the plane and voiced how badly he wanted to go home. We felt so bad for him.
We got on the plane, and took off and JD was doing great. He was excited to be on the plane and going home. After about a half an hour into the flight, the captain came on the speaker and informed us that a warning light came on and said that we were heading back to the Provo airport. We hardly had a lunch, and with no food back at the airport, I was worried how well any of us were going to do. They told us that they probably weren't going to be able to fix the airplane until the next day, but after a while of waiting, we found out that a plane from Las Vegas would be coming to get us back home, but it wouldn't be there until 5pm, and we wouldn't be taking off until 6pm. They announced this at 2:30pm. Luckily, the airline provided drinks and pizza on them, but it wasn't going to be there until 2 hours later.
JD napped for a little bit, and Justin left the airport to see if there was a gas station close by to get us food and see if there was something lighter for JD to eat. With no such luck, Justin walked back to the airport, and it felt like forever. JD woke up from his nap, saw that dad was gone, and cried and screamed for 15-20 minutes. This made me nervous since Justin was going to be leaving in the next weeks for boot camp (He's joining the army if you didn't already know, by the way), and JD was looking for his dad. People kept coming up to me to see if they could offer JD candy or something to calm him down, but of course none of that was going to help.
Finally, Justin got back and we waited for a long time for the plane to come. We "enjoyed" some pizza and finally boarded the plane. JD at this point did not want to go back on the plane, and screamed and cried again when he had to sit in his seat all throughout the longest boarding and take off of our lives. When we were finally able to pull out our electronics, JD calmed down and was happy again. We got back to Oakland at 7pm, when we probably should've been back by 2 PST. JD fell asleep on the car ride home and stayed asleep throughout the rest of the night.
All in all, we had fun seeing family, and I know JD loved every minute with his cousins.
